Snakes and Vipers

Matthew 23:33-34
“You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? Therefore, I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.

They stood within their sanctity,
To watch as the truth died.
They professed loudly their wisdom,
But they knew that they lied.

For they had not lived sacred lives,
Or cared much for their flock.
Instead they focused on their pride
And, of their wealth, took stock.

They let the poor and hungry starve
Without fear they'd be caught.
They took the last the widow had
Without a second thought

And, in their proud self-righteousness,
Condemned those who decried
The callus nature of their lives,
Which, heaven’s laws, denied.

They had one task given to them,
To care for The Lord’s sheep.
But they were too lost in their pride.
As they’ve sown, they will reap.
