Honoring and Missing

Proverbs 1:8
Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

It seemed like they’d always be there,
Right up until they left
An empty whole I cannot fill.
I still feel so bereft.

I often recall things they said,
The wisdom they would share.
Sometimes I hear them so clearly,
It's as if they’re still there.

Back then I was their rebel child.
The wisdom they’d impart,
That seemed to go unnoticed, then…
It lingers in my heart.

I long to hug them one more time,
To tell them that I heard.
They may have doubted it back then,
But I heard every word!
