The Chains We Forge

Which are the chains that bind your soul,
The chains forged in your heart?
For that is where each link you bear
Took shape and got its start.

Are those chains formed by bitterness,
By jealousy, or greed?
Perhaps it’s anger, or envy,
In which your chains took seed.

They bind your spirit to their will,
Until you cannot see
The life you cherished before them,
Or hope of being free.

They hold you fast and weigh you down,
Crushing you with their weight.
Telling you that you can’t be free,
That, for you, it’s too late.

But that’s a lie, for truth be told,
Those chains are fragile things.
You have the strength to break their hold
And all the pain it brings.

It is a choice that you must make,
Let go of what binds you,
The anger, envy or the greed,
And all they put you through.

Forgive others, forgive yourself,
And put aside the chains.
You’ll find the joy you thought had died,
In point of fact, remains.

Isaiah 55:7
let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
