Learning To Listen

You told me once that I’d pull through,
That I would survive this.
And then You told me once again…
My “hearing’s” hit or miss.

But when I still wept to myself,
You sent someone to say
The same words of assurance that
You’d offered me all day.

I don’t know why it takes so long
For me to understand
That You have held me all along
In the palm of your hand.

But, much like Jonah with his whale,
I know I’ve learned one thing,
If I’d just listen the first time
The learning need not sting.
