And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.
They were among the very least,
With nothing to their name.
Even the sheep they watched over
Were seldom theirs to claim.
They had no value on this earth,
And few would call them friend.
Their lives were spent out with the sheep
From beginning to end.
But one day the last would be first.
That day was drawing nigh,
As they lay on the frozen ground
Watching a starlit sky.
