John
19:28-30
Later,
knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be
fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they
soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and
lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is
finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
A
darkness rolled across the land
That
heaved beneath their feet.
The
task that He’d come to perform
Was
now, at last, complete.
The
debt was paid, the sin washed clean,
The
sacrifice was made,
But
those who stood beneath that cross
Were
broken and dismayed.
For,
even then, the did not know,
Did
not yet understand,
That
this was prophecy fulfilled,
This
sacrifice was planned.
They
stood beneath that blood washed cross
As
darkness filled each heart,
For
though He died to redeem them,
It
tore their world apart.
Though
peace would come another day,
Today
they faced the price.
They
wrapped their hope in linen cloth,
In
myrrh, aloe and spice.
They
laid Him in a tomb of stone,
Sealed
against life and light,
And
left Him there, to lie alone
in
death’s eternal night.
